About the Alsama Language School

What is the Alsama Language School?

  • The Alsama Language School is a social enterprise created by our refugees to teach people Arabic whilst directly supporting those same refugees with another source of income.

Why was the Alsama Language School Founded?

  • The Language School was founded in recognition of the teaching abilities of our older students who teach our younger classes Arabic and English.
  • After beta-testing our Levantine Arabic curriculum for non-native speakers on the non-Arab foreigners who worked for Alsama, our Levantine Arabic curriculum is ready for other non-native Arabic speakers.
  • The Language School allows you to both benefit from and reward the Arabic teaching of our refugee teachers by supporting them with a direct income.

Where is the Alsama Language School?

    • The Alsama Language School is situated in the Alsama educational centres in both Shatila and Bourj el-Barajneh.

    How are lessons conducted?

    • If you come to us with some level of Arabic, before your first lesson we will give you a test to determine what level of Arabic you are currently at. That way, you can hit the ground running.
    • This will, of course, in part depend on whether your lessons are in person (in Beirut) or online (over Teams).
    • Regardless, all lessons are planned by our teachers – with regular homework and tests to consolidate your learning.

    FAQ?

Are lessons 1-to-1 tuition or group-based lessons?

    • Most lessons will be 1-to-1 tuition, unless you approach the Language School as a group requesting group lessons.

What is the difference between Alsama and the Alsama Language School?

    • The Alsama Project, amongst other things, runs educational centres that eliminate illiteracy and innumeracy within 5 months of new students joining our school.
    • Our work is supported by the MCC Foundation, the Malala Fund, and Women Win, to name but a few organisations supporting our work.
    • The Alsama Language School is a social enterprise that aims to directly support:
      • a) our older refugee students, who teach our younger classes, with another source of income
      • and b) Alsama by using any additional revenue, once the teachers have their share, to help build new educational centres across Lebanon and the MENA region.

Are there other ways to support the work of Alsama without joining the Language School?

I have no knowledge of Arabic, is the school appropriate for me?

    • Yes, we cater to all levels of proficiency in Arabic. So whether you know some Arabic, or none at all, the Language School is the perfect way for you to improve your Arabic.
